Retarding the timing would DECREASE the chances for detonation....unless of course doing so to the point of increasing combustion temps to the point of detonation....but that would be unlikely at a spike of 19PSI and a drop to 15 PSI I think you read my post in a way not not intended. If he's running lean, the detonation sensor could be kicking in and retarding the timing, causing the power loss.
